It’s official, the Nobel Peace Prize is meaningless

As many others, I was stunned this morning to learn that President Barack Obama had been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. I wasn’t stunned because I don’t like the man; I was stunned because I feel like in his short tenure he has done nothing to merit such a “prestigious” award.

I mean, let’s be frank. His nomination was submitted in February, a full 12 days after he had assumed office. Even now, he’s not even been in office a year. What has he done to merit such an award?

He’s done little that I can tell, other than traveling the world apologizing for American might.

And it has me a little worried. Here we have a man with a well known ego that some say is the size of Texas. So many things have fallen into his lap. He barely has a decade—total—in politics. He spent less than 1/3rd of his first term in the US Senate as a Senator before he became candidate Obama. Now, with little more than his name and professed hopes and dreams he’s won the Nobel Prize. All of these “achievements” with little work to show how they came to pass.

What has me worried is this; when Obama faces a real challenge, such as we might face in Afghanistan or with Iran, what will he do? Does the think that his name and charisma alone will carry the day, such as he must have thought while lobbying for the Olympics in Copenhagen? Or will he actually become a “decider”, as many derided Bush for claiming to be? Will he actually “get real” and weigh various options, choosing the one with the highest possibly of success for the nation? Or will he “hope and dream” that what he wants to have happen will come to pass, just to be awoken by reality and utter failure to the detriment of the American people?

From his actions since taking office I’m terrified what the answer to this question might be.
